For the first time, the French performance artist JR shows his large (20x25m) scale photographic placards of the FACE 2 FACE project within the context of a public space.Along various points of a city walking tour, the works will be exhibited in the street, in a sort of open-space gallery; accessible and visible to anyone.

The exhibition space RAUM 210 at Friedrichstr. 210 will be both the starting point and the main information point of the ‘tour’.

From 8th June to the end of September, the Bevilacqua La Masa foundation will be hosting an international event in the charming open space of the Venice Arsenale. Organized in collaboration with Consorzio Venezia Nuova and Thetis, the event consists of an exhibition of Street Art, the visual language of contemporary youth culture.

"Walls" will include the site-specific works of three international artists: JR (France), 108 (Italy), and Daim (Germany), all of whom will be working directly on the scaffolding of the buildings in the Venice shipyard, starting this June. Each artist will be working on a wooden wall, placed up against the shipyard buildings and covering the facades of the Tese della Novissima complex.The terms “urban writing”, “graffiti art”, and “aerosol art” began to appear more than thirty years ago. Today, however, Street Art is a worldwide phenomenon; a complex and diversified one as stencil (printed images), posters, and stickers are allied to more ‘traditional’ techniques. The phenomenon first took off in New York City, but today this art form can be seen in all the major European cities: Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, and, in Italy: Turin, Rome and Milan, as well as hundreds of smaller urban centres. If, in the past, Street Art was thought of as a way of enclosing, personalizing a territory, a neighbourhood, or particular urban area, today contemporary art along with design, graphic arts, fashion and music, draw upon this culture, finding constant inspiration for the reinvigoration of their own visual languages.
Thus, it is no coincidence that such world-renowned artists as Jean Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, as well as more recent names like Barry McGee and Banksy, all of whom have traversed the world of Street Art, have shown their work in the most important museums and exhibitions of contemporary art.

The Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation has been dedicated to promoting young artists ever since it was founded. In this way, the Walls Project is in perfect harmony with the institution’s mission, one that sets it apart from many other art institutions in Italy.The Foundation strives to actively promote project-based urban art initiatives / collaborations. The event will mark a new phase for this part of the city: opening up the vast areas of the Arsenale, the oldest in Europe, which is finally being revived after years of disuse.

BOXI was born in Kent in 1974 and studied painting at St. Martins School of Art, London. Since 2000, he has lived and worked in Berlin, where his sprayed figures can be discovered in many public places. We are proud to present his first large solo show. We will show wall-works, cut-outs and canvases, as well as the latest editions. The photorealistic effect of his work is achieved by a highly labour-intensive stencil technique, which Boxi often combines with classical painting techniques.

BOXI will be the first artist in our exhibition series, in which we will present solo shows by: Herbert Baglione, Brad Downey, Mark Jenkins, Daniel Man, Pius Portmann, Mirko Reisser (DAIM), Tilt, Vitché and ZEVS.

From the 14th of June until the 28th of September 2008 the audience at The Art Centre Silkeborg Bad will be able to gain an insight into a highly interesting period in modern art. The Art Centre Silkeborg Bad has succeeded in borrowing more that 120 works of art by internationally acclaimed artists from a large German private collection. The exhibition offers a great opportunity for getting some idea of pivotal aspects of contemporary art.

In the exhibition entitled "Call it what you like! COLLECTION RIK REINKING", the audience will thus, in Silkeborg, be able to experience works of art which challenge the prevailing conception of art, from mid-June and three-four months onwards. The selection of works of art for the exhibition takes as its' starting point Conceptual Art of the 1960's and -70's, Minimalism, Pop Art and Street-Art. All of these categories are well represented in Rik Reinking's collection.

The collector, the 32 years old Rik Reinking, has for some time now collaborated closely with employees at The Art Centre Silkeborg Bad in making the exhibition a interesting platform for the audience's encounter with the forms of expression of contemporary art. There will be made good use of the exhibition areas.
Reinking's motive for building a significant international collection is his passionate interest in contemporary art and in communicating art.

Street Art, Graffiti and Urban Art at the Kunsthalle Dominikanerkirche

From the 25th January till the 30th March, the Kunsthalle Dominikanerkirche in cooperation with REINKINGPROJEKTE present "Fresh air smells funny", a group show highlighting a diversity of consistently progressive artistic approaches. All the artists have their creative roots set firmly within the urban context.

The exhibition comprises works of street art, graffiti and urban art, among others by Boxi (GB), Brad Downey (USA), Daniel Man (D), Mirko Reisser (DAIM) (D), Tilt (F / USA), Vitché (BR), ZEVS (F), Pius Portmann (CH / USA), Swoon (USA), Hera (D), Mark Jenkins (USA), D*Face (GB) sowie Os Gemeos (BR).

Visitors to the exhibition (and the external public space art works related to it) are invited to immerse themselves in the idiosyncratic world of images and thoughts particular to this art form, alongside the artists, who will be working partly in situ. Some of the artists from Europe, the USA and South America will realize their works especially for Osnabrueck.

Always on the search for new forms of expression, DAIM with his new "Tapings" group of works availed himself of a material which is actually used for packaging his work. He succeeds in charging this rough material - masking tape - with virtuosity. Not using any additional colour, DAIM only works with industrially produced tape, which is available in different strengths.

For distribution and consumers, the different qualities have been clearly marked by different colours of the tapes. This way, the range of colours is deliberately and strongly restricted, without losing any of its explosive effect.

As early as 1975, the French media philosopher Jean Baudrillard spoke of graffiti as the "revolution of signs" - the true medium of those who, within the post-industrial metropolis count only as consumers. No longer is this revolution just sub-cultural. It has been a few years since "street art" and "graffiti" left the confines of Hip Hop-culture behind.

No longer do artists just mark their territory. They communicate with the urban world of signs, twist their meanings with wit and verve and, in this way actually produce political art.From 11th February 2007, a selection of eleven international artists will be shown in Wuppertal. They all come from a graffiti background but over the years have learned to emancipate themselves from the scene’s characteristic vocabulary. Yet, they would never deny their origin. Their works show where they are rooted and that is exactly why the works will be realized predominantly at site.

Eleven of the most prominent international graffiti artists: Herbert Baglione (BR), Mirko Reisser (DAIM) (GER), Os Gemeos (BR), Daniel Man (GB), Pius Portmann (CH), Stohead (GER), Tasek (GER), Tilt (FR), Miss Van (FR), Heiko Zahlmann (GER) and Zevs (FR) - show works that are, in part produced directly at the gallery. All artists will be present at the opening.

As early as 1975, Jean Baudrillard spoke of graffiti as the "revolution of signs" the true medium of those artists who reflect the significance of the human being within the post-industrial metropolis. For this purpose, the sprayers apply an individual visual language that adapts to the conditions within urban space, utilizing the optimum potential of that language as the basis for artistic interventions. A cross-section of approaches from the last 15 years shows how versatile and of what high quality the artists’ writings and images are, and especially, what a considerable influence they have on common perception. The exhibition "Waking up Nights" unites eleven of the most influential graffiti artists. Not only the local scene but, increasingly, the international art world is shaped by their work and by their tags and pieces.

Like a seismograph, graffiti or street art reacts directly to the social tremors of everyday life by visualizing them. Often, socio-critical statements play a big role.
No longer do the artists just mark their territory. They communicate with the urban world of signs, twist their meanings and often contribute "political art". Typical of many of the works is the subtle and latent impact that arises from the close connection of the piece of art and its place. This is why the exhibition also comprises works that are realized by the artists in situ, thereby affording them the ability to react to each specific context.

Works by Pius Portmann, Stohead and Mirko Reisser (DAIM) show how virtuosic and picturesque the language of graffiti can be. The artists Herbert Baglione and the Os Gemeos twins, as well as Daniel Man, demonstrate how cultural differences can be reflected in illustrations. Heiko Zahlman shows works, which enhance certain tendencies of minimalist painting and thereby deal with the origin of graffiti. Zevs’ consumption-critical projects reveal a conceptual approach. In the same way, Tilt combines graffiti and photography in his self-conceived concept, which also plays with clichés connected to the female sexual organ. Miss Van, too, in her unmistakable portraits, is solely concerned with the female image. The contribution by Tasek makes it clear that the artists boldly manipulate assumed borders of the genre, rather than feel restricted by them.

The show evolved from a co-operation with Rik Reinking who due to his long-term activity as collector of street art and his many projects within this domain, is a promoter and champion of the genre.

The temporary sculpture project at the City Nord14th May until 24th September 2006

sculpture@CityNord promises to become the event of the Hamburg Art Summer. For the first time, the Grundeigentümer Interessengemeinschaft City Nord GmbH (GIG) have arranged a temporary sculpture project in Hamburg’s City Nord. With In the young curator and collector Rik Reinking and the Hamburg gallerist Peter Borchardt (who specializes in art within the public space) GIG has found two deeply engaged and highly competent partners for the project.

The project is part of the Hamburg Summer of Architecture 2006 and is planned to take place every two years. Due to its high quality, the sculpture project will certainly attract streams of visitors from beyond the region. The Hanseatic City will profit from this art project, especially in World Cup year.Hence, the City Nord explicitly presents itself as a location of art and culture. The project has been classified "the most sophisticated contribution concerning the topic of art within the public space" by the Department of Culture. The Senator of Culture, Karin von Welck, will be present at the opening of the project on 14th May at 11am in City Nord Park. The final event will take place on 24th September. Prof. Lingner of the University of Fine Art will support the project in the form of a seminar and a symposium.

The Artistic Concept
Today, the dynamic Reinking / Borchard art-duo will present a list of artists which promises exciting contributions. About 30 reputable – mainly young – artists take part in the project. This is where young art from Hamburg will meet international stars of the art scene, such as Lawrence Weiner. Most of them have been considerably successful within the art scene. There are those that you would have heard plenty about and those that you will hear just as much about in the future. Reinking is keen to encourage discourse with the most important exponents of previous generations and towards this end explicitly involves them in the project and the debate.At present, there are two artists presenting their works at the Kunsthaus Hamburg. Sonja Vordermaier and Jan Köchermann have received the Hamburg Scholarship for 2005. The works chosen are not just restricted to one art form and comprise single sculptures, groups of sculptures, installations, performances, concerts and video art. There will be huge, impressive contributions, as well as positions that will have to be discovered. Besides sculptural objects, there will be platforms on which -just like on a stage- real-life projects and performances will be realized. There will be some fascinating local interventions such as a disappearing path or a car park that becomes a party lounge. Street lamps turn into candelabra, chairs hang from the sky, trees invite fairies, instruction signs vehemently demand more nonsense. Furthermore, an Expo-Container is to be made available that will be used for exhibitions by about 20 artists, who will take turns to exhibit in a rapid-fire turnaround. There will also be a video-project with various programmes shown at a small cinema space on the +14 Platform, curated especially for this event by some of the absolute insiders of the scene. Almost all core ideas and methodologies deal with the City Nord and its urban development. Most works are produced explicitly for this project. It will be very exciting to see how these artists react to the controversial urban development of the City Nord - a rather peculiar office town that arose in the late Fifties and with its many company headquarters is the workplace for about 30,000 people. You can expect a great deal from Rik Reinking’s work.While discussing the project, the young collector and curator defined the course of sculpture@CityNord: a certain quality of ‘process’, flexibility, experiment and a broadening of the whole concept of sculpture and conceptual art.

The makers: "A sculpture gives a face to a site and, thus, an identity. A sculpture represents the 'extra' that a commune, patron or employer spends in order to document something special and to take responsibility for a communal living space."

Supporting Programme
Alongside the opening and closing nights, further special activities are planned, including: artist videos, musical events and a panel discussion with the involved artists and qualified intermediaries.
There will be an information point where people will have the opportunity to book guided tours or rent audio-guides. Art catalogues will be available for browsing and sale. A new café, which offers snacks and drinks, is also planned. The café will be run by Waagenbau (known through the Centralparc in the Schanzenviertel).On 19th May, a Sculpture Run over 3.3 or 10 km will take place. The artist Falk von Traubenberg will present an accompanying photo competition on Platform +14.

Structure of the Project
The project is an exceptional example of a public arts initiative being successfullly realised and financed by the private sector and carried through via the enthusiasm of all people involved. It has been supported and promoted by the local authorities in an extraordinarily cooperative way.

Minimal Illusions – Working with the Rik Reinking Collection: one of the youngest collectors, Germany’s intermediary and, at them same time, an early promoter of what are now some of the most respected artists and artistic approaches, will be showing an exclusive selection of outstanding works by over 50 artists from Europe, Japan and Overseas.The show examines issues of contexts, interfacial approaches and conflicts. The works relate to one another in vital and exciting ways that transcend historic boundaries. For example: what has Ulrich Rückriem to do with Günter Tuzina or Wulf Kirschner, Robert Rauschenberg with Urs Frei, or Jonathan Meese with David Reed? What links Tom Früchtl, Reiner Splitt, Johannes Esper and Stefan Panhans? How do strategies of contemporary minimalist art provide a connection between yesterday and today?

Minimal Illusions – Working with the Rik Reinking Collection turns Villa Merkel and the Bahnwärterhaus into an exciting (temporary) museum which combines two different perspectives: the Collector (Rik Reinking) and the Curator (Andreas Baur).

Smell of paint in the air

K3 Hamburg

From 15th until 28th April, the four graffiti artists of the getting-up Studio-Collective DAIM (Mirko Reisser), TASEK (Gerrit Peters), STOHEAD (Christoph Hässler) and DADDY COOL (Heiko Zahlmann) will be exhibiting their works in Hall K3 at Kampnagel. The exhibition "Smell of paint in the air" aims to prove to fans, people interested in art and, especially to sceptics of graffiti art that the stereotype of the sprayer is outdated. Together with curators Rik Reinking and Rolf Bergmeier, the Hamburg artists will present their own interpretations of graffiti in their unique styles, which are well known outside the scene and throughout the world.

Rik Reinking has been promoting the artists of getting-up for some years. The international Reinking Collection also represents young, unknown artists alongside international stars and is known for its diversity and high quality. Just like "Smell of paint in the air", his exhibitions promise some interesting dialogues.

The show includes works on canvas, sculptures, installations and murals, which are partly realized in situ.

Born 1977 in São Paulo / Brazil where he still lives and works.

Baglione is renowned for his strong, simplistic street murals that are reminiscent of Southwest Pueblo cave drawings, morphed with extraterrestrial images, brilliantly placed on rooftops and street surfaces, only visible in their entirety from an aerial view. His images are of the obese and the painfully anorexic - extremes of human shapes, elongated and rounded for the ultimate in simplistic, dramatic and iconic human symbols; thus illustrating his interest in human imperfection and extremes.

Baglione's art is constantly evolving and changing via strong aesthetics and visual language, though his figurative subjects remain constant. Baglione relies heavily on a monotone palette of black, white and golden hues. At times, Baglione's work has had a strong minimalist and simplistic bent whilst still utilizing his elaborate calligraphic language and definite style somewhere between the Art Nouveau images of Audrey Beardsley and the eerie, mystical, whimsical language of the "children's" illustrator Richard Scarey.

Baglione, who uses a deep narrative as the basis of each painting, believes that: "An artist who stimulates the spectator's pleasure and desire to research his production is most important. Being just aesthetically beautiful is not enough."

Born 1974 in Kent, England.
He completed his studies at the London St. Martins school of art with a BA Fine Arts degree in painting in 1996.
Boxi has lived and worked in Berlin, Germany since 2000.

Boxi creates hand cut multi layered life size stencils that he exhibits in galleries and on street walls. It is often their placement within the installation or urban landscape that completes and defines their action, enabling the work to interact with the space. It is within this collaboration that the material boundaries of the work are dissolved, affecting the perception of the image.
